Background of the Study
Tax revenue is a crucial component of the national budget and is instrumental in financing development programs, including poverty alleviation initiatives. In Nigeria, where a significant proportion of the population lives below the poverty line, the government has implemented various programs aimed at alleviating poverty and promoting economic development. Ogun State, one of the key states in southwestern Nigeria, has seen efforts to reduce poverty through the allocation of tax revenue toward development programs targeting health, education, and social welfare.
Historically, Nigeria’s tax-to-GDP ratio has been low, indicating underperformance in tax collection relative to the potential tax base. This underperformance has made it difficult for both the federal and state governments to fund essential services and social programs. In Ogun State, the government has made strides in improving tax collection systems, seeking to increase revenue generation for the execution of development projects that are essential for poverty alleviation.
Poverty alleviation programs in Ogun State have included microfinance initiatives, agricultural support, and vocational training schemes. The state government has often allocated a portion of its tax revenue to these programs, yet the effectiveness of these allocations in reducing poverty remains a subject of concern. There is a need to examine whether tax revenue in Ogun State is being efficiently allocated and utilized in addressing poverty and whether the poverty alleviation programs are producing measurable results.
This study seeks to explore the relationship between tax revenue generation and poverty alleviation programs in Ogun State, assessing the effectiveness of the programs in reducing poverty and the role tax revenue plays in funding these initiatives.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increased focus on tax revenue generation and the implementation of poverty alleviation programs in Ogun State, poverty levels in the state remain high. It is unclear whether the tax revenues generated are being effectively allocated to address the root causes of poverty or whether the poverty alleviation programs are having a substantial impact. The problem lies in understanding how the efficient allocation and utilization of tax revenue can contribute to more effective poverty alleviation programs in Ogun State.
This study seeks to critically evaluate the relationship between tax revenue and poverty alleviation programs in Ogun State, exploring the challenges and successes in the allocation and use of tax funds for poverty reduction.
